CAST IN STONE
by
Kelvin M. Knight
Ayers rock hadn’t hummed this much when she touched it. Aboriginals believed in the spirituality of rocks, but Amber was unconvinced. She was a believer, but… Faith came with doubts. Without doubts faith became certainty. And yet, she was convinced humming filled this rock. She felt it through her cheeks, her hands. Her hands which reflected the trees and the clouds. She gasped. Something altered, imperceptibly, and Amber became her humming… within this rock. Watching these trees and this sky peel away, an incredible stillness filled her.
Such
peace.
‘Why?’
The humming stopped. Her mind shifted. This moment was gone.

Thank you to everyone for joining in this week (11/08/17), and reading each other’s stories. You don’t have to be a Friday Fictioneer to read our stories so please don’t be shy, there is a mix of styles and storylines all inspired by the same photo.
Thanks, as ever, to Rochelle for hosting Friday Fictioneers so congenially.
You have the great gift of making the scenes in your story feel real, not only in description of the place but also the inner world of the character. I was sorry when the spell broke.

Dear Kelvin,
I was glad Amber wasn’t literally cast in stone. Does anyone have perfect faith without doubts? I ponder. Good one.

Rochelle

Dear Rochelee
In answer to your question, I have met plenty of people, who do.

P.S. Really enjoying Kaddish – finding myself re-reading certain paragraphs and pages again , like savouring a good wine. 😊
P.P.S. Doesn’t feel the same on my iPhone though – Kindle broke 😇

A person can find peace in so many different ways and even at times when you believe you won’t. Great use of words. Very well done!

Really enjoyed this. Thoughtul–and I was so relieved she didn’t become a permanent part of the rock!

I am relieved that you are relieved. At no point during this story was Amber ever going to become part of the rock. Her Faith and Doubts prohibited it. 🙂 Thank you for commenting.

I liked the repetition of humming. I felt it in my bones. Nicely done.

I’m glad you had the rock let her go. I was afraid you were going to have her absorbed into it and be stuck there. 😉

I liked the way you handled the pace of the narrative. It’s not easy to do when you only have 100 words. And I felt a warmth from this story as Amber achieved her moment of spiritual insight.

I was going to call Amber, Alice, but thought that would be too corny. Good morning, Sir Ivor. How is you keeping today?
