AN UNWELCOME HOLIDAYMAKER

Dear Readers

Sorry I have been a tad quiet this last week or so, I have been busy promoting my first collection of flash fiction FAITH in a FLASH.

I have missed being able to put finger to keyboard and produce something out of nothing, I hope my something below is to your liking.

Sincerely

Kelvin

AN UNWELCOME HOLIDAYMAKER

by

Kelvin M. Knight

This rock. I’m safe on this rock. Backpedalling, I move away from that water which looked so inviting. That water my brothers both took leaps of faith to enter. Craig bombed in, while Conrad dived in like a dolphin.

I’m no mermaid. I’m no angelfish. No matter what his syrupy voice says. I can’t jump in. Can’t dive in. Can’t drop in like a stone.

Those black teeth. Those blacker eyes. They’re gawping at me through this mountainous rock.

Stop it. I hate you.

I feel myself shivering. Feel myself slipping. Again. My hands claw the rock, become one with the greyness while his hands claw the water, become one with the blueness.

Then that insidious smile. Then those black horns rise and fall like deformed waves between my unsuspecting brothers.

Please. Don’t hurt them. Please!

‘Sis, will you stop staring at your reflection and jump in, the water’s perfect!’

  1. I love how this unfolds and enjoyed the lighthearted ending. I have to wonder if she’s wearing a snorkel and that’s the reflection? Or has Penny intuited something more sinister?

The monster IS often inside us.

      1. Don’t play ketchup. If you’re going to play, you should definitely play salsa. Hope you can catch up long enough to share a new story this week! Hope all is well with you too 🙂

      2. Things are okay here – Storm Freya is just hitting. 70/80 mph wind gusts along the coast and we are 1/2 to coast. I do plan to join in this week, just salsaing through all my comments, then a few bits and bobs of stories to read for other bloggers then I shall jump in…

  2. Gripping writing. Although I agree with Rochelle that there is a suggestion that the enemy is within her, I feel there is more to it than that. The girl perceives a masculine tempter, almost a demon with black teeth, black eyes, and black horns, and her response to the temptation is one of terror. “No matter what his syrupy voice says,” she can’t enter the water. It could be a personification of an anxiety disorder perhaps. My first (and second and third) thoughts were that she has been abused and maybe her abuser is even present as she clings to the rock.
It’s a haunting image. I’m not sure how well I shall sleep tonight, Kelvin!
